2 dc blocks = 1 inch; 4 rows = 1 inch


Materials
Baby wool, 3 ply - 3 skeins (2 ounce) in pink. 5 small white pearl buttons; 2 yards of white lace, 1/2 inch wide; 2 1/2 yards of pink satin ribbon, 1/4 inch wide.


Instructions
Cardigan: (Back) Starting at lower edge, make a chain to measure 14 inches.

1st row: Sc in 7th ch from hook, * ch 3, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat form * across until row measures 12 inches (24 loops). Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn.

2nd row: (right side of work) - 3 dc in first loop (1 bl made), * 4 dc in next loop (another bl made). Repeat from * across, chain 4, turn. 3rd row: * Sc between next 2 bls, ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in 4th ch of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. The 2nd and 3rd rows constitute pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 6 inches in all, ending with 2nd row. On last row omit turning chain. Turn.

Shape Armholes: Sl st in next 8 dc, work in pattern across to within last 8 dc. Ch 3, turn. Continue to work in pattern over these 20 loops, until piece measures 3 3/4 inches form first row of armhole shaping, ending with 2nd row. Break off.

Right Front: Starting at lower edge, make a chain to measure 8 inches. 1st row: Work as for first row of back until 12 loops have been completed. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. Continue to work in pattern as for back until piece measures 6 inches in all, ending with 2nd row. Turn.

Shape Armhole: Sl st in next 8 dc, work in pattern across (10 loops). Continue to work in pattern until piece measures 2 3/4 inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending with 2nd row. Ch 4, turn.

Shape Neck: (next row) - Work in pattern until 6 loops have been completed. Ch 3, turn. Continue in pattern until piece measures 3 3/4 inches from armhole shaping. Break off.

Left Front: Work as for Right Front, reversing shaping.

Sleeves: Starting at bottom, make a chain to measure 9 inches. 1st row: Work as for first row of Back until 14 loops have been completed. Continue in pattern until piece measures 6 1/2 inches in all, ending with 2nd row. Break off.

Collar: Make a chain to measure 12 inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until row measures 10 /2 inches. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 1 1/2 inches. Next row: Sc in each sc across, decreasing 1 st at both ends. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last row twice. Break off. Sew up side and shoulder seams. Sew sleeve seams and sew in sleeves.

Band: 1st rnd: Attach yarn to top of Left Front, sc closely across front to bottom, make 3 sc in corner st, sc around bottom to next corner, 3 sc in corner st, sc across Right Front edge to neck edge, 3 sc in corner st, sc around neck edge, 2 sc in same place as first sc was made. JOIN: 2nd and 3rd row: Sc in each sc across both fronts and bottom, making 2 sc in center st of each corner at bottom, ending with sc in alst sc of opposite front. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Work as for previous row, making 5 ch-2 buttonholes evenly spaced on Right Front Band - (to make a buttonhole; ch 2, skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc.) 5th row: Sc in each sc and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Work as for 2nd row. Break off.

Cuffs: Attach yarn at bottom of sleeve. 1st rnd: Sc closely around, holding work in to measure 5 inches. Join. 2nd to 6th rnds: Sc in each sc around. At end of 6th rnd, break off. Sew collar in place. Sew buttons on Left Front Band to correspond with buttonholes. Form a rosette of white lace around each buttonhole and sew in place with buttonhole stitch. Press lightly.

Bonnet: (side piece) Starting at front, make a chain to measure 13 inches. 1st row: Sc in 7th ch from hook, * ch 3, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across until 22 loops are completed. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. Work in pattern as for Cardigan until piece measures 5 inches in all, ending with a loop row. Break off.

Back - 1st row: Attach yarn to 8th loop, ch 3, 3 dc in same loop, 4 dc in each of next 7 loops. Ch 4, turn. Continue to work in pattern over these 8 bls until 7 patterns have been completed, ending with a loop row. Break off.

Back Edging - 1st row: With right side facing, attach yarn to first st of bottom edge and sc closely across, drawing it in to fit. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 6th rows incl: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. At end of 6th row omit turning chain. Break off.

Cuff: Attach yarn to first loop of Front, ch 5, in same loop make (d tr, ch 1) 7 times and d tr; * in next loop make (ch 1, d tr) 9 times. Repeat form * across. Break off. Lace 1 yard of ribbon through first bl row of Side Piece, allowing for ties at each end. Fold back to Bonnet and stitch corners in place with ribbon rosettes. Sew lace to outer edge of cuff.

Booties: Sole (make 2) - Starting at center with double strand of yarn, ch 17. 1st rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 6 ch, dc in next 8 ch, 7 dc in next 8 ch, sc in next 6 ch, 2 sc in same place as first 3 sc (heel). 2nd and 3rd rnds: Sc in each st around, increasing 3 sc evenly across toe and 5 sc evenly across heel. 4th rnd: Sl st in each sc around. Break off. Continue with single strand of yarn only.

Side Piece - 1st rnd: Attach yarn to center back of last rnd of Sole and make sc in back loop of each st around, increasing 4 sc evenly across toe. 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around. Repeat 2nd rnd until Side Piece measures 3/4 inch. Break off.

Instep and Tongue: Mark off 10 sts across center front on last rnd. 1st row: Attach yarn where first marker was placed, sc in same place, sc in next 9 sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 2 3/4 inches. Break off. Holding the Instep and Side Piece together, sc through both thicknesses for 1 1/4 inches on each side. Break off.

Top of Bootee - 1st row: With wrong side facing, attach yarn to first sc of Side Piece, make sc in same place, ch 9, join with sl st to first sc (a loop made), * ch 3, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around Side Piece, ending with ch 9, sl st into last sc (another loop). Continue in pattern as for Cardigan until 7 rows in all have been completed, ending with a loop row. Ch 5, turn. Next row: In first loop make ( d tr, ch 1) 7 times and d tr; * in next loop make (ch 1, d tr) 9 times. Repeat from * across. Break off.
Lace 1/2 yard of narrow ribbon through loops at front edges of top and tie into a bow.
